Throughout the year, we often find ourselves occupied with so many tasks or problems that we forget to think about what is important. This month our character of focus is a thankful heart. To keep this, we must stop focusing on the problems and think about what is good. In this lesson, you and your family can slow down to discuss things for which you are thankful.
The best place to visit to help you understand how truly blessed you are is a 3rd world country. That is exactly what we are going to do. We are going to take a trip to Honduras. I have had the opportunity to go on mission trips to the beautiful country of Honduras. When you get off the plane, everything looks so green and tropical. The people are kind and willing to share whatever they have to make you feel welcome. However, as you visit the communities and walk with the children, you see the hunger, lack of clean water, and a safe environment. Every time I left, I walked away with a greater appreciation of all the things we have in the USA, but I also wondered how I could problem-solve with the people of Honduras to help. In this lesson, you will look at some of the problems the Honduran people deal with and discuss what we should be thankful for as a family. -AMW

As you look at each picture and read each description print the I am Thankful for page and write five things you are thankful for and write what ideas you would share with Hondurans to help solve some of their problems. For Kindergarten students, you can draw and share your thoughts.
Countdown to Thanksgiving:
Take 30 envelopes and write numbers in the bottom left corner. Hang a piece of twine or string on your wall or mantel, and clip envelopes in numerical order to the line with mini clothespins. Each day leading up to Thanksgiving, encourage everyone to write something for which they are thankful on a slip of paper and place it in that day's envelope. By Thanksgiving, go through your envelopes as a family. Acts of kindness jar:
As a family, write on slips of paper activities you can do for others or the community. Some of your acts could be drawing a picture for someone, baking cookies, taking out the trash, doing someone else's chores for the day, or picking up trash around the community. Once the jar is full, students can pick each day out of the kindness jar and complete the action. |
Pumpkin pie spinner:
Trim the edge of a paper plate rim. Then paint the rim with a mixture of white and brown paint to resemble the color of crust. Take rust-color card stock, cut a circle to fit the center of the plate, and adhere it in place. Put the plate on top of a second paper plate, poke a hole through the centers, and then insert a brad through the holes. Cut a slice out of the top plate (be careful to avoid the brad), handwrite the words on the top, and thankful items to the bottom plate. Patriotic Photo Frame:
