Many children are found being disrespectful to their parents; teens are rioting and destroying their community; adults are looting; police are dishonored and nothing is being done. People are losing their minds. So we will focus on a characteristic that needs to be awakened, honor. Definitions state that honor is to regard with great respect. Dr. Scott Turansky definition gives a clear picture stating that “Obedience is revealed in actions; honor is revealed in the attitude that goes along with those actions.” So let us teach our students the importance of not only obeying because even dogs can do that, but share how to keep a right heart in our actions. -AMW

Brief History of Mexican American Contributors to our Society
The story of Mexican Americans is linked to the fortunes of the United States. Before 1854, a large part of the western U.S., including much of Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Utah and Wyoming was actually part of Mexico.
Through war, treaties and land purchases, roughly 100,000 Mexicans came under the jurisdiction of the US. In what had been their own land, these new American citizens faced racial discrimination including loss of property, low wages and even lynching.
Because of the need for cheap farm labor, many Mexicans came to the U.S. During the Great Depression, however, approximately 1 million Mexicans for deported to Mexico.
Even through the difficulties, many peoples of Mexican descent have become citizens and have contributed to our culture and economy. Many served in WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf Wars.
The oldest continuously inhabited town in Colorado was established by Hispanic farmers. The city of San Luis also has the oldest church in Colorado.
In 1983, Frederico Pena became the first Hispanic mayor of Denver. He later served under Pres. Clinton as Secretary of Transportation.
We can all appreciate the cuisine that was brought here from Mexico. Love those tacos, burritos, enchiladas, mole, tostadas, et al.
