CHURCHES ARE GOING WOKE
It is truly troubling to see that Socialistic inspired “Wokism” is flooding into our churches, Christian ministries, Christian colleges and universities and Christian book distributors. In researching this phenomenon, I have found books entitled “Woke Church” by Eric Mason, “Jesus was a Liberal” by Jeni Cook-Stivale, and “Christians Against Christianity” by Obery M. Hendricks Jr. All of these books are advocating “Woke” ideals: white guilt and oppression, corporate repentance of past racial sins, defunding police, black poverty and victimization, hatred of capitalism and the Constitution, and the blocking and unfriending of the conservative, evangelical Right. They support confrontation to change these social inequalities. |
This “Woke” attack is nothing more than an attempt to promote socialism to cure all ills, and an effort to confuse, mislead and draw people away from their trust in Christ. Yes, there is, unfortunately, racism in the church and it is not just white churches. There is hatred of homosexuals, lesbians, and those who have difficulty determining their sex. Frankly, there is dislike of strangers, homeless, drunks, drug addicts, and other Christians that aren’t like us. The problem has become imparting the meaning of love and the love of Jesus to the congregations. |
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul
and with all your strength and with all your mind’ and,
‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Luke 10:27.
and with all your strength and with all your mind’ and,
‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Luke 10:27.
Do we really love God like that? Do we even love ourselves? How then can we get to loving our neighbor? And hopefully no one is still stuck on “Who is my neighbor?”
An author, John Branyan, a Christian comedian gives an excellent rebuttal to the “wokism” controversy. “Let me be clear, love of neighbour requires you to be concerned for the just treatment of your neighbour, whether they are Black, Hispanic, First Peoples, LGBT, migrant, Muslim, working-class, or even Baptist. Any derogation of a Christian’s duty to be concerned about the welfare and just-treatment of their neighbour is an attack on the biblical love command itself.”
The concern is that we must stop this incursion of socialistic dogma. And don’t be surprised when you are then accused of not recognizing that “ethnic minorities have grievances and white churches have any responsibility to do something about it.” The social justice will include condemning the guilty (the white man) and clear the innocent (poor black people). This is usually rectified by affordable healthcare & urging sustainable environmental policy, ensuring LGBTQI people “have the right to work” framed in civil rights language, but really the goals of Democratic party, as though forcing a church to hire LGBTQ clergy thus providing basic rights to the oppressed. It’s a tactic to get the pastor and congregation to accept disputed ideas by inserting a social and political agenda into Christianity by the usage of Christian concepts like “imitating Jesus” and “doing what he would do.”
Before I speak on BLM (Black Lives Matter) and CRT (Critical Race Theory), I believe I need to make clear my cultural background. My family and I are African American, Native American and Caucasian. I was born in a small town on the western slope of Colorado. I attended college at Utah State University and was married and lived in Oakland, CA where I had friendship with people from various racial, cultural, political and national backgrounds. I’ve had opportunity to see black men and women who were very industrious, disciplined, educated and successful. I have also seen black men and women who were dependent on welfare, visionless, depressed, irresponsible, criminal and in poverty.
Black Lives Matter is a scam. First of all, they don’t care about all black lives, only those who were killed by police officers. Between 1980-2008, the U.S. Department of Justice found that 93% of Black victims were killed by Black offenders and that there were more black persons arrested for murder than whites in 2016, even though they only make up 12% of the population. Of the 26 martyred black persons only 20 were actually killed by police, and those were under the influence of drugs, resisting arrest, and belligerent. All police were found warranted to fire and released. Only one officer, working in a Democratically ruled state and city, run by Democratic governor and mayor was sent to prison for protecting the city from a criminal and no findings could be found for racism or cold-blooded murder.
They have done little or nothing for the black community, but have certainly enriched their lives. Patrisse Cullors was raised in a dysfunctional family in Oakland and learned early how to use the system. She now has a $1.4 million home in Topanga Canyon, along with many rich and famous white people. Do we believe these are the kind of people that we want to support with God’s finances? But many churches do just that!

Woke ideology require corporate recognition of their racism and corporate repentance of their sins and the sins of their fathers. Many churches and leading Christians have done this as an example to us. The only corporate repentance I find in the Bible deals with the nation of Israel and their disobedience to God. I believe the only true conviction of sin comes to each of us by the voice of Christ and his Holy Spirit. Repenting for arbitrary, non-distinct sin will never lead to long lasting, impactful life change. Whites are not corporately guilty for their ancestors’ racial sins.
If there are racists in our congregations, we have obligation to speak truth just as we would with every sin. Racism is really a result of lack of education and experience, and frankly parental or peer influence and an inability to understand the love of Christ. We have a calling to set our hearts right but of course this is an individual decision. There is no reason to be a victim of “White Guilt”! |
The following is a statement by Chantal M. Duson, founder and racial unity advocate, about identifying Woke ideologies in church.
1. Is your pastor/leader proclaiming the truth that all Black people have equal dignity, value and worth because they are created in the image of God? If the answer to that question is a CLEAR yes, then, I would say a thoughtful Christian can support that message. If you’re wondering why I say this, I am a Black woman. I do think Black lives matter.
2. Is your pastor or leader recommending, or even mandating, that you donate money to BLM (the organization) or attend a BLM protest? Then I would say, your church is probably going woke.
There is a big difference between supporting all humans being created in the image of God and supporting a Marxist organization who doesn’t value the Black fathers or the biblical family structure, and does not share a vision of human dignity from a biblical perspective.

We are fighting socialism in this country, but unfortunately will have to stand against socialistic agendas in our churches. There is an excellent video that reveals more of the truth of wokism in the church. It does charge a small fee but worth the watch. Even a Catholic archbishop is speaking out against this socialistic agenda. If we are informed, read our word, seek our Savior, and boldly speak the words that are given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, we will be the answer to this world’s problems.
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls
around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
1 Peter 5:8 NIV
