The Fall to Socialism
As we watch socialists and democratic socialism take over our government, schools, media, and big business, we fail to notice that the countries around us are slowly adopting socialistic practices. Socialism/communism is growing in Central and South America but unfortunately it is obvious that these governments are not doing any better because of their decisions. Socialism always leads to authoritarian rule and many presidents are cartel members, past Marxist guerillas, and corrupt ex-prisoners; and the conditions of the poor have stayed the same or worsened.
Colombia has been wracked by protests for months, with critical supplies cut off due to roadblocks, nationwide strikes and accusations of police brutality growing louder. "Things are worsening every single day," says Marta Lucía Ramírez, Colombia's vice president and foreign minister. She says the roadblocks are preventing food and critical medical supplies like oxygen from being transported between Cali — the epicenter of the protests — and the capital, Bogotá. She described Colombia's crisis as a worrying test for the country's democracy, in part because of the intense political polarization on display. The protests began on April 28 over tax reforms proposed by conservative President Iván Duque. The reforms were withdrawn, but the protests grew into a major social movement focused on poverty and inequality that has drawn tens of thousands into the streets. |
The protests have attracted international attention mainly due to allegations of police brutality and the rising death toll, which the government puts at 17 but human rights groups say is at least 50. Four police officers have been charged with homicide. Several countries in South America have their own “Black Lives Matter” protest groups.
At least 55 Congressional Democrats have called for the Biden administration to cut off assistance to the Colombian National Police over the alleged abuses. Ramirez asked the Biden administration for donations or loans of coronavirus vaccines and other help in fighting the pandemic, which she says is driving the social unrest.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia have been fighting a Marxist-terrorist war against the people and the state for half a century, funding their operations with extortion and narcotics. Now, as part of the “peace deal,” they want, and will likely get, guaranteed seats in Colombia’s Congress of the Republic. A turn to the left in Colombia is a real possibility, and it will have dire consequences in the entire hemisphere. Peru, which currently has a populist left-wing president, Pedro Castillo, has the worst record in dealing with the pandemic (approximately ten times the world average of deaths per capita) and is on the verge of falling into socialism which might bring back the violence that Peru suffered in the 1980s. Many regarded the election that brought Castillo to power as fraught with fraud. Castillo now faces serious accusations of corruption, and his future, like that of the country, is in doubt. |
Despite Chilean achievements, a combination of well-orchestrated attacks by those who favor socialism, together with the failures of current President Sebastián Piñera’s administration, have brought Chile to the brink of returning to the dark days of Salvador Allende’s socialism.
The end of the road is Cuba, admired by so many socialists throughout Latin America and now under the reign of Raúl Castro, the younger brother of Fidel. If you publicly oppose the regime, expect to end up in prison or be assassinated. Their wives and relatives are arrested on the way to church for calling attention to the injustices. In Cuba as in China (or U.S.A.), the truth is something socialists and communists can’t handle.
Enemies of the free economy are well prepared to wage war and destabilize any meaningful opponent. Can the anti-socialists join forces and stop socialist tactics in the Americas? Will Latin Americans be able to reverse what seems to be a fall into even more socialism, corruption and misery? Will the United States remain a constitutional republic that has been the hope and light of freedom or will we join our neighbors into the downward slide to socialism?
