NEED FOR MORE IMMIGRANTS?
I happened to hear Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, our socialist representative from New York, speaking about her support of immigrants crossing our borders. She suggested that more immigration is a solution to declining birth rates in the United States as people suffer "under the burdens of capitalism." These burdens are inhumane levels of student debt, low incomes, high rent, no guarantee of healthcare & little action on climate change, she tweeted.
Those hurdles, she said, create "a situation where feeling stable enough to have a kid can feel more like a luxury than a norm." There are movements of people declining to have children due to climate change and the cost of student loans have also previously been reported as a block on having kids. |
I FIND THIS REASONING OF AOC TO SUPPORT IMMIGRATION BOTH ILLOGICAL AND CONFUSING.
The US is experiencing a falling birth rate since 2007 when the birth rate reached a peak of 4.3 million. In 2019 the provisional number of births in the US was 3.7 million, according to NVSS. This is a decrease of approximately 600,000 births over a 12-year period or 50,000 births per year. In 2019 there were 625,346 or 930,160 abortions depending on whether you believe the CDC (which doesn’t include California) or Guttmacher Institute.

Since AOC is such a firm supporter of abortion, perhaps she would do better to blame the falling birth rate on the murder of our own children instead of the other excuses. We all know that the decrease in population means fewer workers, less tax contributions and the inability to pay, not only for Medicare, Medicaid and all other social programs, but the other programs she is so interested in.
In regard to suffering “under the burden of capitalism”, she blames student debt on decreasing population. First of all, who would consider having a baby while going to college or have one immediately after? Both choices require a great deal of commitment, physical energy, mental energy and money. Before you take on a financial obligation, you must consider whether you can handle the financial commitment or whether you even need it. Not everyone needs or wants to go to college.
As far as low income, high rent, and no medical care goes, it doesn’t seem to be a deterrent in having a baby. Most welfare recipients have multiple children and the aid of our social “safety net” for other necessities makes it possible. For those who pay for the benefits that welfare recipients get, they must make good choices regarding education, jobs, housing and child birth. As our population is increased by illegal immigrants, these choices will be more and more difficult for the middle class.
I guess the most ludicrous excuse for not having a baby and thus requiring more immigrants to enter our country, is the climate control issue. AOC is not alone in this idea. There is actually a movement of “Birth Strikers” who actually refuse to have babies until the government does something about climate issues. They believe the Earth is so volatile and unpredictable that a child shouldn’t be brought into a world full of tornadoes, rising ocean levels, pollution, melting ice caps, etc. Too bad they have more faith in science than in God.

I understand why AOC promotes these ideas. She serves a district where over a quarter of those living there are non-citizens. This is higher than any other district in NY. Most of those who are citizens in her district are immigrants. New York already is on track to lose up to two congressional seats during reapportionment due to population decline. This would have an impact on the $675 billion in federal funding for things like Medicaid, Section 8 housing, foster care, and school lunches. |
So, with all the excuses accounted for, what about the immigration issue? Is she willing to continue to allow immigrants crossing the border to die painful deaths? Dehydration, heat exhaustion, or exposure at night in deserts and dry brushland is the most common cause. Immigrants are drowning in the Rio Grande, killed or badly injured climbing the 30-foot-high border wall, or suffocating in airless cargo trailers. Since she wants immigrants so vehemently, surely she would want a controlled and safe entry.
As a representative of this country, shouldn’t she have some concern for the citizens who live in cities, communities and ranches that are located on the border. These people find dead bodies and trash on their land, people in their backyards, drug dealers, and high-speed car pursuits. No one wants to live like that. Come on AOC, show a little more concern for others and less about your political career. As Colorado residents, don’t forget that in 2021, Gov. Polis signed a law to make benefits available to illegal immigrants which include: dental care, mental health counseling and family services. It also expands eligibility for property tax, rent and utility subsidies. The estimated cost for expanding eligibility to immigrants is $12 million a year, according to a legislative analysis. |
This year the state agreed to health care coverage and in-state college tuition without legal residency. The state also allowed federal stimulus dollars to go to those without lawful US residency. Remember, we are paying for these immigrants to flood our cities. Granted, we are a nation of immigrants, but we expect those who come here not to suffer horrible deaths and cruelty nor to bring drugs, gangs or criminal elements to our country. Our elected officials should make our communities, states, and nation SAFE! KLN |
